Sailboat that combines energy from wind and sun
Leisure fun and an environmentally conscious life are not mutually exclusive, because thanks to new technologies, environmental protection can nowadays be implemented in various areas of life. Thus, to protect the environment, our leisure activities can also be in harmony with nature and designed with consideration for the environment.

In this context, an environmentally conscious life brings various benefits. In addition to a sustainable way of life, which is especially important for future generations, new concepts and ideas can be shown that are not only environmentally friendly, but can also be more practical and efficient than conventional methods and solutions. It makes particular sense to look at environmentally friendly alternatives when it comes to leisure activities that pollute the environment because they consume fossil energy, for example. For this reason, the generation of energy from renewable sources is now playing an increasingly important role in leisure activities.

Since leisure time mainly takes place in the private sphere, it must be considered which form of green energy generation is suitable and causes little effort in use. For the private sector, the generation of energy from wind and sun is therefore suitable, as it does not cause any production costs or environmentally harmful waste due to the elimination of fossil fuels. In addition, it is particularly suitable for activities that take place outdoors.

Sailing, for example, is an activity that actively deals with the elements of nature. Although sailing without the use of an internal combustion engine as an auxiliary motor is a leisure activity that does not harm the environment, it can still be optimized in terms of efficiency with the help of new technical possibilities. In addition to the wind as a drive, it makes sense to expand sailing to include the element of the sun as a source of propulsion. Thanks to the development of solar foil, sailing is now also proving to be an ideal area of application for photovoltaics.

The idea lies in the combination of wind power and solar energy. The sails of the boat not only provide a wide area for propulsion by wind, but also for the generation of electricity from solar energy. For this purpose, the sails of the boat are simply covered with a thin layer of solar foil. The wind sails and their function are not affected because the solar foil is light and flexible. The energy generated from the solar foil is stored as electricity in a battery on the sailboat and can be used as needed to power the boat with the help of an electric motor. In this way, the boat can also move when there is no wind. Conversely, there is still wind power, which drives the boat with the help of the sails even on cloudy days.

This shows that the two options of propulsion are not mutually exclusive, but complement each other perfectly. This creates more independence in locomotion and more fun in sailing. Because even if only wind power is used as a drive in order to not rule out the classic way of sailing, with the help of its own power source remains the certainty that in case of need the boat can also be powered electrically to make it manoeuvrable regardless of the weather. So, thanks to the solar foil, the wind sails are multifunctional and enable more efficient sailing compared to the classic variant, as both wind power and the sun can be used to drive the boat.

The prototype for the idea described is not yet available. However, the idea of combining solar energy and wind power can also be implemented on a larger scale and used in merchant ships with future-oriented electric propulsion.
