Concept for a new, purely acoustic wind instrument
Here's a concept for a new, purely acoustic wind instrument that combines novel sound production with traditional playability:

---

The Aetherhorn

Overview:

The "Aetherhorn" is a hybrid wind instrument combining features of woodwinds, brass, and ancient horn designs with a novel resonating mechanism. It produces haunting, ethereal tones with unique timbral flexibility not found in existing instruments.

---

Construction:

1. Body:

* Made from a lightweight but resonant hardwood (e.g., grenadilla or bamboo-laminated birch).
* Long, conical bore (like a bassoon) but curved into a spiral shape (like a sousaphone).
* Approximately 1.5 meters in total length when uncurled.

2. Mouthpiece:

* A dual reed-diaphragm system: the player blows into a chamber where a reeding membrane (thin natural film, e.g. fish skin or organic latex) vibrates in tandem with a flexible double reed.
* The diaphragm tension can be adjusted with a tuning wheel to control overtone emphasis and air resistance.

3. Tone Holes & Slide System:

* Instead of traditional keys or valves, the Aetherhorn uses rotary sleeve holes:

* Sliding tone holes controlled by rotating rings along the body.
* This allows continuous pitch-bending, glissandi, and microtonal capability.
* There are six main tone rings —one for each finger (left and right hand)—plus two thumb-activated pitch shift levers that raise or lower the fundamental by a fifth or an octave.

4. Resonator Bell:

* An expandable bell made from parchment-stretched maple with internal baffles (like a Helmholtz resonator).
* The baffles can be adjusted with small levers to change the character of the tone—dark, nasal, or reedy.

---

Sound & Range:

* Timbre: A blend of duduk, English horn, didgeridoo, and serpent—reedy, rich, but airy.
* Range: 2.5 octaves, with an extended harmonic series achievable via diaphragm and lip control.
* Dynamics: Exceptionally expressive; whispering soft tones and powerful calls.

---

Playing Style:

* Held like a bass clarinet with a neck strap.
* Fingering is intuitive for wind players but enhanced with rotational control for extended technique (vibratos, quarter tones, bending).
* Encourages circular breathing, flutter tonguing, and throat singing for layered harmonics.

---

Unique Features:

| Feature | Benefit |
| ------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| Reed-Diaphragm Hybrid | Dynamic control over harmonic content |
| Rotary Sleeve Holes | Seamless pitch bends and microtonality |
| Adjustable Resonator Bell | Real-time timbral shaping |
| Organic Materials | Natural acoustic complexity and sustainability |

---

Aesthetic:

* Carved runic motifs and natural finishes.
* Each Aetherhorn is custom-built and slightly unique, like a violin.

---

Musical Role:

* Ideal for film scores, experimental music, ambient textures, and world fusion.
* Can play lead melodies or textured drones.
* Appeals to composers looking for something both ancient and futuristic.
